Improved Frequency Control Using Grid Forming Converters in a Multi-Machine System

This paper addresses the enhancement of frequency stability in electric power systems through the utilization of Grid-Forming Converters (GFMs). As Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs) become increasingly prevalent, traditional voltage and frequency control strategies that rely on synchronous generators face significant challenges. The limitations of conventional Grid-Following Converters (GFLs) underscore the necessity for IBRs to mimic synchronous generator behavior, a need effectively met by GFMs.This study explores the integration of GFM technology into the Western System Coordinating Council (WSCC) 9-bus system, employing a Virtual Synchronous Machine (VSM) based control design to achieve frequency regulation and enhance the system's frequency stability profile.
