Application of Circular Statistics on the Weather Radar Doppler Spectrum

The problem of detecting the extended precipitation-like weather targets with radar is addressed. Target detection is performed with the help of circular statistics on the Doppler spectrum. The proposed approach has been applied to both simulated and real radar data. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed method has been compared with the traditional moment estimators, and it has been shown that the proposed approach outperforms them. The importance of the circular moment estimator has been shown in the aliased (folded) Doppler spectrum.
