Virtual Phase Sequence Exchange-Based Control for Transient Stability in Virtual Synchronous Generator

Virtual synchronous generator (VSG) controlled isolated power grid has attracted significant attention due to its voltage support capabilities. However, even under small disturbances, the system can experience transient instability risks similar to conventional power grids. To address this issue, various control methods have been explored. Phase sequence exchange (PSE) is one such method, which stabilizes the system without compromising system capacity and inertia, though it introduces additional power electronic components. In response to this, a transient model for VSG-controlled isolated grids is established in this paper, and a novel control strategy called virtual phase sequence exchange (VPSE) is proposed. VPSE enhances transient stability by reducing the power angle of the VSG through power electronic control in the inverter, effectively replicating the stabilizing benefits of PSE without the need for extra devices. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed solution is verified through simulation experiments conducted in MATLAB/Simulink.
