Hf-cvd Grown MCD/NCD Diamonds and its Applications from Mechanical to Biomedical Engineering

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown diamond finds both industrial and mechanical applications. The applications are more pronounced when grown on cemented carbide (WC-Co) and titanium alloy substrates. This research examines the broader biomedical uses of laboratory-produced 'micro-crystalline diamond (MCD)” and 'nano-crystalline diamond (NCD)” coatings on cemented carbide substrates. These coatings were produced using diamond seeding powder employing hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) method. Characterization techniques included 'micro-Raman spectroscopy (μ-RS),, 'atomic force microscopy (AFM),, and 'transmission electron microscopy (TEM)” with 'selected area electron diffraction (SAED)”. Machining tests were conducted using two diamond-coated tools and an uncoated tool under varying conditions of cutting speed “feed” and depth of cut. The results of the study showed that the laboratory-grown diamond exhibited minimal flank wear. Furthermore” the study compares machining dental burs and tooth acrylic using uncoated and diamond-coated cemented carbide tools for dental applications. The paper also discusses the applications of N CD and Ultranano-crystalline diamond (UN CD) in Orthopedic implant devices” which enhance implant integration.
