Integrative GIS Framework for Mapping Inundation Zones: Insights from Land Use and Land Cover Studies

Addressing the impacts of climate change is vital for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). Flooding, increasingly exacerbated by climate change, poses a significant global threat, leading to extensive loss of life, economic disruption, and environmental degradation. The relationship between land use, land cover (L ULC), and flood inundation is critical for understanding and managing flood risks, particularly in the context of climate change. This project focuses on the assessment of LULC and its impact on flood inundation patterns through the development of a Flood Inundation Modeling System (FIMS), utilizing a Geographic Information System (GIS) based application to confront this challenge. A LULC map for the year 2022 was generated utilizing Maximum Likelihood Classification applied to SRTM data. Subsequently, inundation modeling was conducted using HEC-RAS to simulate flood dynamics in the study area, Satara district of Maharashtra, India. By integrating advanced GIS technology with hydrological modeling and real-time meteorological data, FIMS enhances the accuracy of flood predictions and inundation mapping. The system aims to improve flood response and management strategies, thereby mitigating the adverse impacts of flooding and bolstering resilience in vulnerable communities, ultimately supporting sustainable development and effective climate adaptation efforts.
