Design and Performance Analysis of Permanent Magnet DC Motor Using ANSYS Maxwell

Permanent magnet direct current (PMDC) motor was designed and analyzed to understand the characteristics of speed versus input current, efficiency, output power, and induced coil voltage, and air gap flux distributions. In order to compare the designed machine with literature, magnets made of the same materials and having the same geometric dimensions were used with basic motor features. In the design, the current, voltage, speed, torque and efficiency of two surface magnet motors with different rotor structures, including the eddy current effect, and the magnetic analysis, were investigated using the ANSYS-Maxwell program. The results highlight the effectiveness of simulation in predicting motor behavior, optimizing performance, and ensuring reliability. This approach not only reduces the need for extensive prototyping but also accelerates the development cycle and enhances the overall efficiency of PMDC motors. After applying the rated voltage, current, geometric dimensions of stator, and rotor, and materials used for the designed motor achieves 94% efficiency. The findings demonstrate that ANSYS Maxwell is a powerful tool for the design and verification of PMDC motors, providing valuable insights into their operation and facilitating the creation of high-performance, reliable motor solutions.
