Smart Wearable Device for Monitoring Pediatric Chronic Kidney Disease Patients

As children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) suffer a loss of kidney function over time, their susceptibility to cardiac and glycemic conditions such as hypertension, cardiomyopathy, low heart rate variability, and hyperglycemia increases, requiring an accurate, minimally invasive technique for management of the disease. This paper, therefore, proposes a prototype design for minimally invasive monitoring of the electrocardiogram (ECG), pulse saturation of oxygen (SpO2), blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), and glucose levels in children with CKD using comfortable sensors embedded as a chest belt. The focus of the study was on children aged 6 to 12 due to the prevalence of the disease at these ages, reflecting risk factors that are critical for the future. A system for signal processing and filtering was built in LABVIEW after collecting data of vital parameters from an online database. An alarm system, based on the parameters' ranges, was designed using fuzzy logic on Lab Viewalong with a MATLAB script to send messages to parents and doctors for deciding the required action.
