Modeling and Analysis of Crosstalk Noise for Analog Interconnects in Server Microprocessors

In today’s server microprocessors, crosstalk noise on among interconnect lines puts a significant impact on the chip’s reliability and performance. The common practice of adding a ground shield to mitigate noise and to reduce crosstalk from an aggressor to a victim is not always effective. In fact, weak ground shields may act as an antenna and can even pick-up noise and couple to the victim line. This paper introduces a mathematical model to evaluate the impact of inadequate shielding and recommends best layout practices. The methodology presented is simple, quick, and enables efficient design adjustments during the development process.
