Fault Current Management Using Bidirectional DC/DC Converter in Smart DC Microgrid

The fault current contribution of distributed generators (DGs) is a main cause of misoperation of protection equipment. This paper proposes the fault current management using bidirectional DC/DC converter (BDC) for smart DC microgrid. The fault current contribution of DGs flows to the battery storage connected to the BDC. The total fault current amplitude is decreased to the grid current amplitude, and the fault current contribution does not disturb the coordination of protection equipment in the DC microgrid. According to the simulation results, the proposed fault current management can effectively decrease the total fault current amplitude to the grid current amplitude.
