Use of Syngas Produced from Coconut Shells Fueled for a Petrol Engine Generator

Naturally burned coconut shells cause air pollution and contribute to global warming. They can be converted into syngas to be used as an alternative fuel. Thus, this research aims to study the performance and pollutant of a petrol engine generator using syngas and its mixtures at 1,500 rpm and different loads. Syngas was generated from coconut shells by a medium-sized downdraft gasifier. The syngas flow was increased from 13 to 27 kg/hr. The best load using 100% syngas was found at 60% by adjusting the ignition timing at 25o BTDC using a modified compression ratio of 10:1. Electrical power was reduced by only 16.64%, and engine performance was slightly lower than gasohol 91. Pollutants, such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and unburned hydrocarbon, from using 100% syngas were lower than those using gasohol 91. Additionally, the dual-fuel gasohol 91 combined with syngas and air flows at 13 kg/hr increased engine performance and decreased carbon dioxide better than gasohol91.
