Input-Output Feedback Linearized Control of Grid-Forming Converters in Virtual Synchronous Machine Mode

This paper presents a robust input-output feedback linearized voltage control of an inverter operating as a Virtual Synchronous Machine (VSM), enhancing the stability of Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs) in grid systems. IBRs, which replace synchronous generators, pose challenges due to their different dynamic characteristics. The VSM control approach emulates synchronous machine behaviour in IBRs. Input-output feedback linearized control dynamically compensates for the nonlinear dynamics of IBRs, enabling the design of a linear PI regulator and enhancing converter stability. Controller gains are selected using eigenvalue sensitivity analysis. The proposed control is evaluated in a scenario where a synchronous generator is replaced with the IBR in the IEEE 118-bus network, demonstrating the robustness of the proposed control in enhancing grid stability.
