The Application and Effectiveness Evaluation of ChatGPT in English Teaching

With the rapid advancements in generative artificial intelligence, ChatGPT, an advanced large-scale language model, has found widespread applications in English teaching. This study investigates the use and effectiveness of ChatGPT in the context of English language instruction, with a focus on its impact on personalized learning, teaching outcomes, and student attitudes. The research involved 200 students enrolled in an English course at a university, employing a comparative experimental design with an experimental group and a control group. Independent sample t-tests were conducted using SPSS to analyze score distributions. The findings reveal that the group utilizing ChatGPT-assisted instruction demonstrated significantly better performance in all four language skills, particularly in listening and reading. Furthermore, the experimental group showed notable improvements in learning motivation, autonomous learning capabilities, and overall interest in the subject matter. Through both quantitative analysis and student feedback, this study confirms the positive influence of ChatGPT on personalized learning, language skill enhancement, and student engagement. These results provide robust empirical evidence for the potential of ChatGPT in English education and suggest its promising role in the future of educational technology.
