Mapping Student Understanding: Analyzing Concept Maps Using Network Similarity Measures

This study explores the use of Network Analysis as a method to evaluate student-generated concept maps. By treating concept maps as networks, network analysis techniques are applied to assess the structural and relational aspects of the maps, providing insights into students' understanding and knowledge organization. The approach highlights key concepts, relationships, and patterns, offering a quantitative framework for evaluating the depth and coherence of student learning from student constructed concept map and concept map derived from student responses to a quiz. Comparing student-generated maps with an instructor's reference map offers valuable insights into both fundamental understanding and deeper conceptual comprehension. This innovative method has the potential to enhance educational assessments and inform teaching strategies.
