Enabling Sustainable E-Waste Management Through Blockchain Technology

E-waste is a global problem for human health and the environment; it is growing rapidly. In this study, an inventive method of managing e-waste is made possible by the combination of blockchain technology and the Internet of Things with Collector Vendor Machines (CVMs). Blockchain technology is used throughout the lifetime process, from collecting user-generated e-waste to transporting it to a recycling facility. Its decentralized and unchangeable features guarantee data security, transparency and traceability for all parties involved. To validate the blockchain data, users authenticate themselves by scanning QR codes on the CVMs container. After successful authentication of the user, it deposits the waste into the CVMs container which is equipped with an IOT load cell sensor for weight of e-waste, then transaction records are created on blockchain. The blockchain also offers smart contracts to automate tasks like data recording contracts, recycling, monitoring and reward distribution. After sending e-waste to the recycling centre, token-based reward distribution to the users, which enhances the user involvement. Using the IOT devices, the load cell sensor and microcontroller ensure real-time data and using a middleware platform offer encryption techniques that offer smooth communication between the CVMS, IOT gateway, blockchain network, handles issues regarding data privacy, scalability and security. Hence, the system provides a safe, secure and responsible platform for e- waste management practices.
