Effective EV Battery Charging System Using MPPT Controller for Solar PV System

The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has become more and more popular in the recent years as a way of addressing the issues associated with fossil fuels. Furthermore, the increasing demand in power is addressed by the affiliation of the renewable sources like solar energy at the charging stations. This study utilizes a solar photovoltaic (PV) based EV charging to meet energy demands. The conventional perturb and observe (P&O) MPPT strategy is employed to achieve optimal power production from the solar panel. However, the main disadvantage is the discontinuous nature of operation that PV supplies because of solar irradiation variability. For the purpose of regulating boost and buck modes of bi-directional converters, a closed loop PI (proportional-integral) controller is implemented, employing a constant current and constant voltage (CCCV) approach. The PI controller is suggested to enhance the efficiency of PV power transfer to EV battery storage, guaranteeing optimum usage of PV output and efficient battery charging. The suggested system is developed and executed using MATLAB/Simulink platform. The average PV efficiency, PV power and battery voltage ripple are 98%, 0.065 W and 0.020 V respectively. The outcomes obtained by simulation show that the designed system is adequate for the requiring operation even when there is a variation in solar radiation.
