Superconductors Application in Power Sector: A Review

This study investigates the use of high-temperature superconductors (HTS) in the power industry, starting with the historical discovery of superconductors. It highlights the distinct features of HTS, including zero electrical resistance and perfect diamagnetism. The focus is on Yttrium Barium Copper Oxide (YBCO), Bismuth-Strontium-CalciumCopper-Oxide (Bi-2223), and Magnesium Diboride (MgB2), exploring their impact on power transmission efficiency, transformer innovations, and Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) systems. The paper also examines the economic viability and environmental sustainability of these materials in transforming the power sector, addressing challenges and future opportunities for widespread adoption.
