Small Axial-Flux Induction Motor for Electric Vehicles

Axial-flux (AF) electric machines can offer higher efficiency and power density compared to radial flux machines for electric vehicle applications. While AF permanent magnet (AFPM) machines have received the most attention, the AF induction machine (AFIM) can be a suitable alternative. In this paper, an AFIM is designed in a same size and volume as a 4.5kW commercial AFPM machine and its 3D finite-element simulated performance are compared over a wide range of torque and speed and shows promising results. The manufacturing of the closed rotor slots for AFIM has been a challenging issue and this paper discusses the possible approaches for the rotor construction.
