Medframealign: 3D Histological Reconstructions Using Video Frame Interpolation Techniques

High-resolution histological imaging is critical for diagnosing and capturing detailed cellular microstructures in human tissue. However, the serial sectioning process for 3D reconstruction often introduces distortions and misalignments, compromising the structural integrity of the tissue. This paper presents an innovative approach that adapts Video Frame Interpolation (VFI) techniques to enhance the accuracy and continuity of 3D reconstructions from 2D histological slices. By leveraging VFI's capability to synthesize intermediate frames through optical flow computation, our method effectively mitigates artifacts caused by mechanical slicing and geometric deformations. Additionally, by incorporating contextual awareness of slice orientation and positioning, VFI ensures precise registration and alignment of histological sections. Our approach integrates various staining modalities and MRI data, demonstrating an improvement of 73.13% over traditional registration techniques in both quantitative and qualitative evaluations. These findings offer a promising solution to the challenges of serial sectioning, significantly advancing the precision of 3D reconstructions in medical imaging.
