Optimal Power Flow Methodology with UPFC and Synchronous generator for Optimal Power Flow Management

Transmission congestion is a major barrier in various electric utilities around the world. To effectively utilize the existing transmission infrastructure, FACTs devices can be used to relieve congestion. To maximize the use of FACTs device in reducing congestion, they need to be used in combination with other power system controls such as generation. In this paper, in particular UPFC(Unified Power Flow Controller) control along with real and reactive generation control is optimized in an LPOPF formulation to manage line loading in a power system. The maximum power ratings of UPFC device are taken into account.
