Raspberry Pi-Based Access Controls Using Facial Recognition and Two-Factor Authentication

This research project explores the implementation of secure access controls which combine facial recognition with two-factor authentication (2FA) on a Raspberry Pi. The system uses a third-party USB 3.0 camera to capture and verify facial images, which then confirms users' identities using libraries from OpenCV. For added security to navigate the lack of expensive infrared cameras, 2FA is required, which necessitates a second layer of authentication beyond facial recognition. Once verified, the system sends signals through the Raspberry Pi's GPIO pins to engage or release a physical lock, which provides an efficient and cost-effective solution for physical access control. This research is a pivot and enhancement of prior systems using similar libraries, which are prone to unauthorized users granting access with pictures of authorized faces. This project aims to demonstrate the feasibility and potential of low-cost hardware and open-source software to enhance security in secure areas, as well as personal uses, which highlights the Raspberry Pi's versatility in security applications.
