Synchrophasor Measurement Using the Perfectly Flat-Top FIR Filter for M-Class PMU

Synchrophasor measurement, an emerging technology, plays a crucial role in the real-time monitoring and control of smart grid applications. It allows for the effective supervision and control of real-time power system parameters under dynamic conditions. The phasor estimation approach is the most crucial factor in determining the accuracy of the synchrophasor measurement. This paper presents the phasor estimation using the finite impulse response (FIR) filter designed by the perfectly flat-top window. Furthermore, it provides a comprehensive performance evaluation under the steady-state, dynamic-state compliance tests, noise, and several harmonics distortions as IEC/IEEE 60255-118-1:2018 recommended. The IEC/IEEE standard signal processing model with Hamming window functions also compares performance. The evaluation of phasor estimation, frequency measurement, and rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) measurement was conducted using the total vector error (TVE), frequency error (FE), and ROCOF error (RFE), respectively. The analysis of the results shows that the performance of phasor estimation by the FIR filter created with the perfectly flat-top window is more accurate than the existing work done at a lower sampling rate. The design and performance analysis of the phasor estimation are performed on the MAT LAB platform.
