Simulation of 11kV HDPE Cable Insulation Containing Manufacturing Defects Using COMSOL Multiphysics

This paper presents the study on the performance of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) as cable insulating materials containing manufacturing defects. In the present work, the effects of voids present in the HDPE insulation due to manufacturing flaws subjected to thermal stress are presented. An 11kV HDPE Cable insulation containing voids is modelled and analyzed in the COMSOL Multiphysics platform. The desirable insulation properties are suitably changed to emulate the effect of thermal aging on the cable insulation. This further enabled carrying out the study related to the electric field distribution in and around the void.
