On-Chip True Random Number Generator Using System Monitor

True random generators are widely used for the generation of cipher keys, VLSI testing, and completely randomized designs where an unpredictable result is desired. However, the output of a true random generator may become predictable after a certain time. Therefore, a random source is required for the generation of true random numbers. Dynamic power consumption, temperature variation of a chip, interconnect delays, and noise can be used as random sources. In this paper, a true random generator using pseudo-random generation and the system monitor feature of Xilinx IP is proposed. The proposed design is implemented on the ML505, and experimental results show that the output sequence of the generator is unpredictable and suitable for secure hardware design.
