From Mirrors to Mindsets: The Chain Reaction of Social Media, Body Shame, and Body Image Perceptions

This research found the problem that social media body shaming has an impact on people's views, judgments, and knowledge about appearances. To understand the impact of social media body shaming, this research aims to provide understanding to the public regarding the psychological, emotional, and social impacts of body shaming. Using a purposive sampling method, at May 2024 data was collected through a survey of 405 respondents within the age of 13-54 at Jabodetabek using Google Forms. The data was then analyzed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to identify body shaming and its impacts. The outcomes of this study show that body shaming on social media influences and influences self-esteem, mental health, and body image. Apart from that, this research also emphasizes increasing public education and implementing support measures to reduce the negative impact of body shaming. This research has an important role and social media policy in addressing and combating body shame to create a healthier and more supportive online environment.
