Enhancing Communication Infrastructure: PLCC for Underground Cable Networks

Power Line Carrier Communication (PLCC) leverages existing power lines to establish communication between two points by transmitting higher frequency signals that are isolated from the power frequency using High Pass Filters or Capacitive Voltage Transformers (CVTs). This paper explores the application of PLCC technology in underground cable networks, where the inherent protection from environmental factors enhances communication reliability. A physical model has been developed, utilizing a 12V, 50Hz power signal and a 12V, 60kHz communication signal, with a modulation circuit based on the IC 555 timer to demonstrate data transmission over power lines. The experimental setup successfully isolates the communication signal from the power frequency, showcasing the potential of PLCC in underground cable systems. This research further proposes extending the capabilities of PLCC by increasing the communication frequency up to 800kHz, which would improve data transmission efficiency and expand communication bandwidth. The paper presents the practical implications of this approach for enhancing smart grid infrastructure, as well as its potential role in modernizing communication systems for urban power distribution networks.
