Real-Time Oil Spill Detection and Analysis Using Drones and SAR Imaging Techniques

Oil spills are considerable environmental and economic threats to marine ecosystems. Source: Our idea describes a drone-based approach to provide real time detection and monitoring of oil spills in water bodies. A drone mounted camera is used to capture live footage which is processed in greyscale to identify oil spills: oil and water are distinguished based on the intensity of the pixels. Users have a toggle feature to switch between greyscale and normal video views for accurate verification. The system also includes Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging analysis to identify dark grey regions associated with oil presence and detailed information about the spill location and volume. Integration of these techniques can increase the efficiency of environmental monitoring through real time detection by shortening response times. This technology helps save early marine ecosystems by preventing the adverse effects of oil spills on the environment
