A Design Tool for EMI Reduction Based on Spread Spectrum PWM

This paper introduces a tool for simulating electro-magnetic interference (EMI) reduction in switching devices using digital spread spectrum modulation techniques. The proposed tool enables the analysis, simulation, and implementation of various pulse-width modulation (PWM) strategies designed to reduce EMI through periodic modulations that distribute spectral energy across a broader frequency range. This versatile tool provides system designers with an effective method to optimize the performance of switching systems and meet strict EMI requirements. Experimental measurements performed on an Artix-7 FPGA closely match with simulation results, validating the approach and achieving up to 28 dB EMI reduction at a 100 kHz PWM operating frequency.
