Single Cell Development Platform for SOC Estimation of Li-ion Battery

To accurately estimate the State of Charge (SOC) of a Li-ion battery, it is essential to develop a model that captures the dynamics of the battery efficiently. This paper presents the implementation of a second-order Thevenin (2RC) battery model based on state-space equations, incorporating temperature (T) effects. The primary goal is to create an embedded platform for real hardware implementation. Simulink-MATLAB was used for developing and validating the state-space (SS) based 2RC model. The model showed high suitability for code generation, and Arduino Due was selected as the embedded hardware for deploying the generated code. The performance of the generated code was evaluated using four key metrics: Execution Time, Build Time, Lines of Code (LOC), and Max Cyclomatic Complexity. These metrics provide insights into the code efficiency and complexity, ensuring its real-time application viability for SOC estimation algorithms. The model was tested under Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) and Constant Current Constant Voltage (CC-CV) profiles at various temperatures. The results were compared with data collected from the cycler for SONY VTC6 Li-ion cell, demonstrating high accuracy and robustness, highlighting the practical utility of the model for real-world applications.
