Study and Performance Evaluation of Design and Control Methods for CC/CV Based EV Charging in WPT Topologies

This paper comprehensively studies different designs and controls of several wireless power transfer (WPT) topologies for battery charging. Generally, most WPT topologies exhibit inherent constant voltage (CV) or constant current (CC) output characteristics. The paper systematically studies many WPT topologies to find these natural CC or CV characteristics, where topologies like LCL/S, S/LCC, S/LCL, PS/SP, etc., are studied for the first time. The battery requires combined CC and CV charging. Hence, many works related to different WPT topologies exhibiting two or more resonant frequencies while achieving the CC and CV charging profile at two distinct frequencies are thoroughly studied. Further, a sensitivity analysis compares the performances and robustness of different topologies' natural CC or CV characteristics when the WPT coil and compensation circuit parameters have ±10% tolerance. Finally, a 500 W lab prototype is built to verify the generalized study for CC and CV-based design for the PS-SP topology.
