Regulating Software as Medical Device (SaMD): A Comprehensive Overview of The International Medical Device Regulators Forum (IMDRF) Framework and Gap Analysis of Indian Medical Devices Rules, 2017

The rapid advancement of digital health technologies has led to the increasing importance of Software as Medical Device (SaMD) in modern healthcare. This paper examines the regulatory landscape for SaMD, with a specific focus on the International Medical Device Regulators Forum (IMDRF) framework. The IMDRF's risk-based classification system is explored in detail, highlighting its importance in determining regulatory requirements. We discuss the lifecycle requirements for SaMD, encompassing the design, development, verification, and validation phases, as well as the importance of continuous post-market surveillance. The clinical evaluation of SaMD, a critical component of ensuring safety and efficacy, is also analyzed, with emphasis on the unique challenges posed by SaMDs. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the IMDRF framework's approach to SaMD regulation and offers insights into the current gaps in the Indian Medical Devices Rules, 2017 (IMDR) related to SaMD regulations.
