Design of Compact Si-IGBT Module Based Power Converter Fed Vector Controlled IM Drives for EV Application

The global concern over pollution and greenhouse gas emissions has accelerated the electrification of vehicles, including automobiles, locomotives, and aircraft. EVs, powered by electric motors and reliable electricity sources, offer several advantages over traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. These benefits include reduced air pollution, zero tailpipe emissions, and lower operating costs due to cheaper electricity. EVs find applications in low-power (E-rickshaws, E-bikes, E-scooters) and high-power (E-cars, E-buses) vehicles. Designing compact power converters for EVs is essential. These converters serve as traction inverters, controlling motor speed and torque. Challenges include managing switching losses, optimizing thermal models, and reducing heat sink size. Integrating multiple circuits and utilizing integrated power modules (IPMs) contribute to compactness. Therefore, the objective is to present the design and development procedure for a three-phase two-level converter integrated with diode rectifiers, choppers, and controlled AC-DC converters. Additional components include voltage sensors, current sensors, gate drivers, microcontrollers, and auxiliary power supplies. The presented configuration is simulated in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment and then the simulation result is validated from experimental results.
