Optimizing Discharge Management Through Lean Process Capability Improvement Using DMAIC

Efficient discharge management is vital for enhancing patient satisfaction and operational performance in hospitals. This study, which adopted a case-based methodology in a leading private hospital in South India, focused on optimizing the discharge process for ESI, ECHS, TPA, and cash patients using the DMAIC framework, Value Stream Mapping, and Process Capability Analysis. Key delays in pharmacy operations, billing, and departmental clearances were identified as bottlenecks caused by communication gaps, understaffing, and inefficient workflows. Interventions such as AI-driven staffing, cloud-based Electronic Health Records, robotic process automation for approvals, and automated billing systems significantly reduced discharge times in the hospital. The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of Lean Six Sigma tools in streamlining hospital workflows and improving patient outcomes.
