Efficient Power Management for Always on Display (AOD) Feature with 2.5D Graphics on Wearables : A Low-Power Design Approach

Wearable technology is seen as one of the advance paradigm in various applications such as fitness, health care, etc. Smartwatches are engineered to integrate seamlessly into modern lifestyles, designed to enhance productivity, health and connectivity. The popularity of smartwatches has been steadily increasing due to various factors such as growing technology adoption, tech-savvy youth, health and fitness focus, etc. but one of the key challenges facing smartwatches is battery life. Lower battery life can be inconvenient for many users who rely heavily on their smartwatches throughout the day for various functions. The display stands out as a primary power-consuming component in a smartwatch. Furthermore, the implementation of features like always-on display can exacerbate battery drainage. These posed challenges in meeting the required battery life to improve overall user experience and satisfaction. We propose a novel approach to enhance battery life through efficient power management using 2.5D graphics. We present novel solution for wearable devices to provide low powered display solutions with 2.5D graphics. To prove the validity of our solution, we show experimental results using 2.5D graphics on smartwatch. Details of our proposed solution for efficient power management on wearables are presented.
