Proposal of Fast Locking VHF PLL Synthesizer

Fast Locking Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) Synthesizers play a key role in many applications that require rapid stabilization of frequency and phase. Fast PLL locking is particularly important in Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS), frequency-agile radars, quantum computing, multi-core processors, and more. This paper presents a new technique for fast locking of PLL synthesizers, based on applying the appropriate pre-bias voltage to the PLL filter and then resetting Phase Frequency Detector (PFD) and counters to achieve initial phase alignment between the reference signal and the divided VCO signal. This approach significantly reduces the PLL settling time, which is also confirmed by the measurement results provided in this paper.
