A method for geolocating distant objects using a MEMS gyroscope

This paper presents a new method for geolocating distant objects using a MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems) gyroscope and available GPS (Geographics Positioning System) coordinates of the measurement positions. Using this method, GPS coordinates of a distant object can be calculated based on two successive gyroscope measurements of the angle which forms the distant object and horizontal line. The measurements can be taken from an UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) or manually from the ground, where GPS signal is available. Accuracy of the method has been tested experimentally using the developed embedded system based on the STM32F103 microcontroller, gyroscope MPU-6050 and NEO-6M GPS module.
