Assessment of Reliability for AIS Configuration Using Fault Tree Analysis

Reliability assessment plays a crucial role in enhancing the sustainability and designing well framed policies of complex modern power system. In this paper, various reliability indices namely unavailability, top event probability failure and importance measures are calculated for assessing the reliability of AIS (air insulated switch gear or substation) configuration. Further, single bus single breaker configuration is considered as standard test system for assessing the reliability. Fault tree analysis (FTA) is used to compute the unavailability and minimal cut sets (MCS) method is used for finding top event probability failure of substation configuration. Moreover, the M CS are also used to determine the importance measures and their sensitivity of proposed substation configuration. The simulation results estimate the unavailability and top event failure probability values which highlights the components and their maximum minimal cut sets causing substation failure. Moreover, the importance measures and their sensitivity are used to identify and analyse the component characteristics i.e. maintenance, improvement, sensitivity and criticality for better reliable power system. Thus, the proposed work is suitable for assessing the reliability of various AIS configurations tending towards reliable power flow in smart grid environment.
