RFID and Blockchain for Systems of Product Authentication

The issue of counterfeit products is real, and is potentially dangerous to industries, economies, and consumers the world over in this new era of globalization and digitalisation. Traditional product authentication system is usually failed to protect securely, transparent and efficiently and become victims of forgery and fraud. In this paper, we propose a decentralized product authentication scheme based on Internet of Things, Radio Frequency Identification, and blockchain. This paper presents a robust tamper-proof decentralized authentication for products across different industrial domains, by integrating the strengths of these technologies. So, the IoT enables this ecosystem by providing infrastructure to collect data 24/7 and communicate between devices with ease. These RFID tags carry unique identification information that allows for precise tracking and verification at all stages of the product lifecycle. These types of tags also allow for automatic data capture with zero need for human intervention, greatly reducing human error rates while optimizing supply chain processes. The combination of IoT in RFID itself cannot address several security issues such as data tampering and unauthorized access. The system incorporates blockchain technology to fill in these vulnerabilities. Laurin: Blockchain - a decentralized and immutable ledger that can record and provide guarantee on the integrity and the transparency of the data regarding each product. Blockchain - With each transactions or changes (as it moves through its life cycle i.e. manufacturing, shipping, ownership transfer etc.) a new block is created. These blocks, which are cryptographically secured, time-stamped and chained in chronological order, make it virtually impossible to alter the data by the bad actors. Furthermore, products are also authenticated with the help of smart contracts, as they have pre-defined rules of controlling their authenticity, meaning only legitimate products will enter the supply chain. It is the combination of IoT and RFID and blockchain that generates a synergy, which can be used to address product authentication challenges. Real time monitoring and tracking is possible with IoT devices, RFID is used for unique identification and blockchain enables security and transparency of data. It has several advantages: it can enhance traceability at all stages of the supply chain, it facilitates operational efficiency, and it lays the groundwork of consumer confidence. The most significant advantage of this approach is that the IAM all-in-one anti-counterfeiting solution enables the end-user to use the mobile app or web interface to check the authenticity of the products and notify the blockchain for real-time validation.
