Portable IoT Smart Devices in Healthcare and Remote Health Monitoring

Summary

Most of the people in the country reside in rural regions need good medical care. The significance of telemedicine and the application of the Internet of Things (IoT) are emphasized in this chapter. The significant developments in healthcare technology that have occurred recently are the result of the Internet of Things due to pervasive use of computers. By deploying IoT based devices, healthcare professionals are provide better service to the general public. This chapter explains how the recent issues in the healthcare system may be fixed by designing a remote health and environment monitoring system, with a focus on patients who are at a greater risk of complications. Since timely treatment is of the utmost importance, this system will enable physicians and other medical professionals to get information about a patient in real‐time which provide the services instantly to the patients in different locations. The system is made up of several sensors that gather data on a variety of factors, including heart rate, body temperature, blood pressure, and air quality. It will analyze that data using a microcontroller and is connected to a mobile application seamlessly. All data are transmitted to the mobile application via a communication module. Since it is upgraded every few seconds, the medical staffs promptly monitor the condition of their patients and react accordingly to any circumstances. The proposed model assists medical experts and also the patient's family in the process of monitoring the patient's physiological data from a distant place. The physiological state of the patient is uploaded to the cloud. Both analog and digital representations of the patient's data are sent via the mobile application that the doctor uses to treat patients. Also, the physician adjusts the rate of medicine infusion from a distant place. Patients who are admitted in hospital or traveling in an ambulance may successfully use the proposed model. This system is portable and is simple enough for anybody to use it. The error rates for the oxygen saturation in the blood, and heart rate measured are correspondingly 2.02%, and 2.63%. Measured values are uploaded to cloud after the data is processed at the fog and edge node in order to reduce the traffic to cloud. After receiving all the data, medical professionals were able to monitor the health of individuals in emergency care.
