Fuzzy logic has been increasingly applied in the control of real‐world processes and in the manipulation of inexact knowledge. The chapter shows how to map a problem from the crisp world into the fuzzy world and then to use fuzzy logic in the control and management of real‐world processes and to work with the supporting tools in the manipulation of inexact knowledge. Defuzzification is the inversion of fuzzification. The defuzzification process is capable of generating non‐fuzzy control actions that illustrate the possibility distribution of an inferred fuzzy control action or actions. The max criterion chooses, as the crisp output, the point at which the (fuzzy) distribution reaches a maximum value. A fuzzy system is called an expert system when it is used to advise, diagnose, or reason and a control system when it must control the behavior of physical world processes or systems.
