Intelligent data analysis is the backbone of any digital transformation initiative aimed at optimizing engineering workflows and reducing costs. With access to rich datasets and decades of expert engineering knowledge, the oil and gas industry is in an excellent position to benefit from these algorithms and workflows. Arthur Samuel states “Machine Learning is a field of study that gives computers ability to learn without explicitly being programmed.” There are three key elements for machine learning models. These are representation, evaluation, and optimization. Machine learning applications has played a major role in the oil‐gas industry. Such applications date back at least two decades. Artificial intelligence in conjunction with data analytics and high‐performance computing adds value to the exploration and production process. The chapter also presents an overview on the key concepts discussed in this book.
