Activating Organizational Capability

Summary

Successfully building an artificial intelligence (AI) capability within an organization requires strong support from the board and the management team, something that is true for building any organizational capability. Leadership should be prepared to face some resistance. Once there is alignment on the vision and goals of AI, the leadership team needs to determine where in the organization the AI teams sit and how they interact with other groups. The AI Center of Excellence (CoE) takes responsibility for those parts of the AI work that benefit from being centralized. The AI CoE is accountable to both upper management and to the business units, for which it provides guidance and support. An AI CoE is responsible for setting standards for how an AI project is run and for ensuring that relevant standards are followed for each project. Data literacy and experimentation are necessary to move toward more meaningful data‐driven decisions across a company.
