Design of an Integrated Five Degrees-of-Freedom Magnetic Suspension System With Long-Stroke Motion

-Magnetic suspension technology offers significant potential for supporting objects due to its numerous advantages. Developing a comprehensive design that simplifies the structure, minimizes size, enhances load capacity, and reduces power consumption continues to be a challenge for magnetic suspension systems. Besides, the ability of the flotor to execute long-stroke motion in one or more directions is essential for many practical applications. This article proposes a novel magnetic suspension system which utilizes an integrated design to achieve five degrees-of-freedom control of the flotor. The system features a simple and compact structure, and the magnetic forces of each channel are decoupled. Moreover, the radial suspensions are actuated by Reluctance force based on permanent-magnet bias flux, providing high stiffness and load capacity with low power consumption; the axial movement is driven by Lorentz force, enabling fast dynamic response and long-stroke motion for the flotor. The characteristics of the presented magnetic suspension system are analyzed and demonstrated through experiments on a prototype.
