Jointly Optimizing RRC State Transition and DRX in 5G New Radio

This study analyzes the contribution of RRC and DRX procedures to the optimization of the performance of 5G New Radio Access Networks. In particular, we investigate the latency versus device energy consumption trade-off in a stand-alone 5G environment with multiple traffic profiles and RRC inactivity timers. The investigation results form the basis of an optimization procedure that selects the appropriate RRC state transition parameters according to the users' performance requirements and packet arrival rates.
