An Overview of Standardization Progress for Integrated Sensing and Communications: Use Cases, Channel Modeling and Potential Challenges

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is a promising technique for 6G, which provides the possibility to enable smart manufacturing, smart transportation as well as smart city. Till now, 3GPP has initiated the study on ISAC in both Service & Systems Aspects (SA) and Radio Access Network (RAN) working group, aiming to identify the potential use cases, requirement and define the channel modeling details. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview about standardization progress of ISAC in 3GPP, including the use cases, deployment scenarios and channel modeling. In the end, the potential challenges for ISAC from operator's perspective are provided.
