Design and Analysis of Thermal Management Systems for an Electric Vehicle Battery

Battery thermal management (BTM) is crucial for maintaining the optimal temperature range within an electric vehicle (EV) battery. It ensures the safety, efficiency, and longevity of the battery cells, which are sensitive to temperature variations. Effective BTM systems help mitigate risks such as thermal runaway, and fire hazards due to hot weather. It also ensures consistent performance under diverse operating conditions. This paper presents the sophisticated design and implementation of a thermal management system for an electric bike battery. The design has been analyzed both in open-loop and closed-loop. Simulation has been carried out using MATLAB Simulink/ Simscape® environment. The results have shown that the Li-ion battery is operated within the operating range of 20 to 30°C with the application of UDDS drive cycles.
