Bidirectional Hybrid Wired/Wireless charging system for Electric Vehicle applications

The rapid deployment of wired charging stations has enabled the quick adaption of electric vehicles by consumers. The simplicity in modelling and control of wired charger makes it well established in EV industry. It also produces efficiency in the desired range. However, convenience is the key issue. On the other hand, wireless charging has benefits like safe isolation between the coils and the possibility of charging the vehicle when in motion. Therefore, in this article, a combination of wired and wireless charging method is put forth in order to make the charging infrastructure compatible to all charging setups efficiently. Further, the proposed system operates in four modes, where two modes allow power flow from Grid-to-vehicle and the other two modes allow vehicle-to-grid power flow. A 3.7kW hybrid charger is designed and experimented and the performance of the proposed hybrid charger is presented.
