Optical Character Recognition of Bhrami Script using Tesseract

This study offers an approach on recognizing the characters of Brahmi Script which is an ancient Indian script containing a diverse range of characters and symbols. The method used here utilizes tesseract OCR to detect and recognize Brahmi characters and is integrated into an android application that presents the corresponding Devanagari translation of the recognized characters. The model developed has been trained on 69000 images extracted from various sources which makes the model flexible in determining the correct translation of the predicted image regardless of the input source. The study focuses on preserving the rich heritage of India by proposing the translation system so that scholars and archaeologists make efficient use of it to analyze and gain insights about the social, economic, religious practices that were prevalent during that era.
