Development of a Fully Integrated Ultrasound and Electrical Impedance Tomography Probe

Enhancement of Ultrasound (US) with Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) can make both diagnostic imaging technologies easier to interpret for medical professionals. Pushing the integration of those technologies forward, a fully integrated US and EIT probe is being developed and validated. The probe’s EIT equipment consists of an electrode array and an analog front end (AFE) fixed into a 3D printed casing. A 16-channel electrode array for performing dual modality imaging with a linear ultrasound probe has been developed and validated using phantom imaging. Results of the preliminary benchtop testing of the AFE demonstrate feasibility of the probe’s full integration.
