A Simulation for the Evaluation of the Mean Opinion Score (MOS) for EVS-WB and AMR-WB Audio Codecs for 5G Mobile Networks

The main contribution of this article is the evaluation of the Mean Opinion Score (MOS) for different audio codecs utilized in the Fifth Generation (5G) of mobile networks. The simulation scenario developed in Python considers how the number of handovers and the speed of the mobile user affect the MOS in the different separation distances between the base station and the mobile user. The Enhanced Voice Service (EVS) and the Adaptive Multi-Rate Wideband (AMR-WB) audio codecs were evaluated, considering various bit rates and Forward Error Correction (FEC). The results show that the higher the speed and the number of handovers are, the EVS audio codec provides higher MOS and, therefore, much better QoS in comparison to AMR-WB. On the other hand, for lower speed values, the MOS difference between the aforementioned audio codecs is neglected.
