Adaptation, Revision, and Reliability and Validity Assessment of the Chinese Version of the Video Therapy Attitude Scale (VTAS)

Objective: This study aimed to adapt and revise Kate Smaller's Video Therapy Attitude Scale (VTAS) for Chinese counselors and evaluate its reliability and validity. Methods: The VTAS was translated, back-translated, and culturally adapted to create a Chinese version. A total of 422 questionnaires were collected from two surveys of Chinese counselors using convenience sampling. Reliability and validity were assessed through item analysis, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Results: The revised VTAS consists of 14 items across two dimensions. Item analysis indicated significant critical ratios (P < 0.05) for all items, with item-total correlations exceeding 0.4. EFA revealed a KMO value of 0.855 and identified two factors explaining 51.3% of the variance. CFA results indicated X²/df = 1.961, RMSEA = 0.035, RMR = 0.035, GFI = 0.936, AGFI = 0.911, CFI = 0.936, IFI = 0.960, and TLI = 0.952. Both dimensions had CR values above 0.8, and inter-dimension correlations were lower than the square root of the AVE, indicating strong structural, convergent, and discriminant validity. The scale demonstrated strong internal consistency with a Cronbach's α of 0.866 and a split-half reliability of 0.829. The two dimensions had Cronbach's α of 0.829 and 0.812, respectively. Conclusion: The Chinese version of the VTAS is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing Chinese counselors' attitudes toward video therapy.
